Hydrogen and CCS

The global energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation in order to meet the challenges posed by the emerging climate crisis, and the need to set a path to net zero emissions of greenhouse gasses by 2050.

As a result, the global energy market is expected to increasingly rely on sustainable, low carbon energy. Hydrogen is expected to play a major role in the future energy landscape according to leading energy sector savants, such as IEA1, Rystad2 and McKinsey3.

The Israeli Ministry of Energy highlighted hydrogen as a pillar of the national roadmap to decarbonizing the energy market by 20504.

Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is also an energy carrier. It enables power generation for a variety of purposes of different scales, ranging from generating power for industrial and domestic users, through fueling of aviation, marine and heavy transportation, to fueling of light transportation.

The industrial use of hydrogen for power generation is still in its infancy, although it is rapidly growing, and expected to further accelerate throughout the next decade.

At present, hydrogen is generated mostly for industries such as petrochemicals, fertilizers and oil refineries. These industries commonly utilize “Grey Hydrogen”, which is hydrogen formed by steam- reforming of natural gas, while the associated carbon is emitted to the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). However, hydrogen can be produced with a lesser environmental impact, and constitute a low-carbon fuel.

There are several methods for producing low-carbon hydrogen, with “Green Hydrogen” (electrolysis of water fueled by renewable energies) and “Blue Hydrogen” (extracting hydrogen from natural gas, and disposing the CO2 by-product) the most common.

Green Hydrogen projects are presently fairly rare though they are expected to gradually gain market share throughout the next decade, likely in places with access to both abundant water and abundant renewable energy sources.

Blue Hydrogen hinges on the ability to capture, utilize and/or store CO2 generated during steam reforming of natural gas, and thus avoid its emission to the atmosphere (as opposed to Grey Hydrogen). Most commonly, the CO2 is transmitted by pipeline as a compressed semi-liquid and injected into underground formations where its stored.

As part of NewMed Energy’s vision for a sustainable future, the feasibility of Blue Hydrogen projects is being explored, taking note of considerable technical, commercial and regulatory challenges.

NewMed Energy is uniquely positioned to tackle such challenges, due to it being a major regional supplier of natural gas, and due to its expertise and experience in subsurface geology and engineering.

In support of this new vector, NewMed Energy joined the Global CCS institute (GCCSI5), to learn from the leading World experts, and join forces with like-minded entities.

Renewable Energies

The growing global movement to renewable energy is undeniable as more and more countries understand the importance and benefits, and embrace the transition from the fossil fuels energy source.

The Paris Agreement, 2015, was an historic milestone, when world leaders representing 195 nations came to a consensus on the necessity to combat climate change and leveling off carbon emissions.

According to a report from the International Renewable Energy Agency, the cost of renewable energy is falling and the continued advances in the technologies of renewable energy systems, making it a favorable source of electricity generation, and an attractive investment opportunity.

The growth of renewable capacity is forecast to accelerate in the next five years, accounting for almost 95% of the increase in global power capacity through 2026

Recently, the stock exchange's regulations have been updated to enable gas partnerships to invest in and promote projects in the field of renewable energies. In light of the new regulation and as a natural continuation of being a leading energy partnership, NewMed Energy’s board of directors made a strategic decision, subject to the required approvals, to participate in the efforts for decarbonization through exploring and investing in major projects of renewable energy in attractive regions globally.
